Emergency Management and Response The Role of Cloud Computing Mike Olson Cloudera November 2009
Full Disclosure ▪ I am a shameless vendor ▪ Cloudera is commercializing the open source Apache Hadoop software and related projects ▪ We believe that big data management -- the core competency of Hadoop -- is of enormous import to government and commercial organizations ▪ Emergencies are chaotic, with logistical and human crises ▪ Data storage and access can play an important role in addressing those
Position on Data Management in the Cloud ▪ Important to separate: ▪ Scalable, on-demand, elastic storage and computation ▪ Remote hosted infrastructure ▪ Both are important ▪ But, generally: I’m in favor of it. Question 1: What is your connection to, and position on, information management and/or analysis in the cloud?
Can Cloud Computing Help? ▪ Strongly suspect that real-time communications, coordination and logistics will remain the primary challenge in emergency response. Forever. ▪ That said: Reliable, available and flexible data capture, analysis and sharing during an emergency can help. ▪ Also: Playing out scenarios in advance, combined with post hoc analysis of emergency response, allow us to learn from each incident and prepare better for the next. Question 2: What opportunities do you see for cloud computing to help w.r.t. information access, integration, and management related to emergency response type scenarios?
Full, Empty or None of the Above? ▪ Impediments? See last slide: Communications, logistics and coordination. ▪ Standardization and data sharing before crises will simplify cooperation and delivery of aid during and after crises. This is significantly a question of political will. ▪ Cloud computing is a good vehicle for such standardization and data sharing. ▪ I am a local optimist and a global pessimist. Question 3: What do you see as the greatest impediments (e.g., security issues, lack of common standards) to achieving cloud computing's potential in such situations? How optimistic or pessimistic are you w.r.t. overcoming these obstacles?
A Different Kind of Real-Time Response ▪ I am going to make this answer up on the fly. Question 4: What is your response to what you heard from Gus and/or similar individuals that you or your organization has heard from w.r.t. cloud computing needs and concerns?
