The tests demand careful reading and evidence-based responses, such as highlighting phrases that support an answer. RIGOR It’s not enough to use process-of-elimination techniques to find an answer. The test includes a variety of demands for higher-level thinking. 8

No More Bubble Sheets Smarter Balanced - for 21 st Century Learning Complex Thinking Required AUTHENTICITY It’s not enough to memorize formulas and apply them to a set of numbers out of context. The new standards apply math concepts to real-life situations, often requiring multiple steps.. WRITING Writing is now assessed at all grade levels, with extended writing in English language arts. Each test, in both language arts and math, ends with a performance task and includes authentic writing. 9

How are these different? English Language Arts (ELA) 1.A balance between literary and informational texts. 2.Using text-based evidence in reading, writing, and speaking. 3.An increase in using more complex texts and building academic vocabulary. Math 1. Focus: Narrowing and deepening what is taught, building on foundational knowledge. 2. Coherence: Connect learning within and across grades to build new understanding. 3. Rigor: Through application to real world situations, knowing and explaining why and how the math works and increased procedural skill and fluency. 10

The way a student interacts with the math, habits of thinking that go beyond that school year Focused on the topics that matter most in math 12

Why Take Smarter Balanced? All of Washington’s public higher education institutions are accepting Smarter Balanced scores as an indicator of college readiness. College leaders in Washington, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Oregon, and South Dakota believe that students who score well on Smarter Balanced assessments and take challenging courses will enter college ready to succeed. Nearly 200 colleges and universities in these states have agreed to allow students in the class of 2016 and beyond who score a 3 or 4 to enroll directly in entry- level credit bearing courses once they are admitted. 13

What if …I do not want to take Smarter Balanced? More challenges to monitor your kid’s growth and areas of support in English language arts and math. For Classes of 2019, the only way to meet Washington State high school graduation requirements is to pass the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English language arts and math. 14
