Metaphor A comparison where one thing is SAID TO BE another without using ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’ She is a walking dictionary. Laughter is the best medicine. His face was stone in colour. She was a raging bull.

Simile A comparison of two things using ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’. She is as tall as a giraffe. The water is a smooth as glass. His face is as wrinkled as a screwed up piece of paper. Suzi and her brother fought like cats and dogs.

Repetition A literary device that repeats the same words or phrases a few times to focus on an idea or to make an idea clearer. Commonly used in both prose and poetry for effect.

Rhyme A rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds (or the same sound) in two or more words, most often in the final syllables of lines in poems and songs. End Bend Send Eat Seat Treat Commonly used in poetry for effect BUT remember poetry does not have to rhyme.
