Improvement of MECH 2410 – Machine Design A Capstone Course in MET’s AAS Program  Andy S. Zhang Mechanical Engineering Technology 186 Jay Street Brooklyn, NY USA Living Lab Fourth Year Fellow May 9, 2014

Outlines  Introduction  Objectives  High Impact Practice  Learning Goals  Student Learning Outcomes  Assessment

Introduction  Machine Design covers the design and selection of basic machine elements using fundamental engineering principles, in-depth analysis and design methods. The topics include the design and selection of shafts, brakes, clutches, springs, screws, bearings, cams, gears and gear trains. The student learns how to design simple and complex mechanical components and systems. Special hands-on mechatronic design project is used to provide an opportunity for student understand the multidisciplinary nature of product design.

Objectives To use High Impact Practices in classroom to facilitate the teaching and learning To use Open Lab platform to improve students learning outcomes To help students to build Learning Portfolios

High Impact Practices Capstone Design Project Learning Communities Through Collaborative study Engage students in undergraduate research Experiential Learning using hands-on multidisciplinary design activities

Learning Goals: Improve student to engage in multidisciplinary design activities Improve students’ teamwork and time management skills Help students to identify different type of mechanical and electronic systems and use proper ones for their design Allow students to integrate mechanical design with electronic components Help students to recognize the importance of multidisciplinary nature of product design Provide opportunities for students to gain working experience through hands-on activities

LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:  1. Identify knowledge and skills necessary to become an entry level mechanical/mechatronic designer.  2. Be able to function as an effective member of a design teams.  3. be able to use critical thinking skill to analyze, test, and design simple mechatronic products.  4. Be able to improve communication skills.  5. Be able to compile a learning portfolios to record and reflect his/her progress.

Conclusions  The best overall solution for indirectly detecting changes in light intensity the braided cable configuration;  The peak change in voltage of 200 mV occurs when the input voltage is fixed at 3.5V.  Furthermore, the behavior of the braided cable is nearly linear from the input voltage range of 0.5V to 3V, which thus results in a clean and predictable method of detecting changes in light intensity that come as a result of a bend or loop in the fiber optic cable.

Assessment  Pre and Post Surveys  Weekly Progress Reports  Rubrics  Design Reports
