Project Briefing 2014 Paul Cairns, Alistair Edwards, Helen Petrie, Chris Power

Introduction to project supervision Each of us will supervise 5 projects Mainly MSc HCITs and SMITs (but we also supervise other students) But there are 16 of you, so reasonable flexibility Each of us propose 7 projects, so we won’t end up supervising every project proposed You can also propose your own project – but you really need to work with one of us to come up with something of the right level of complexity, interest and length for an MSc project 2

The morale of this story … We have flexibility in the system but … You need to be flexible and sensible in your project choices Pick a number of our project ideas that you are interested in from several different people 3

How the system works You read the project proposals on the project page Talk to the person proposing the project – find out more about the project, show you are interested in it You might be asked to write something about how you would tackle the project 4

How the system works Thursday 27 February Voting closes for you, we get to vote on which projects/students we will take Then the system tries to create the best set of matches 5

Once you have a project … You should meet with your supervisor once a week From the beginning of Summer term you should be working full time (i.e. about 37 hours a week on your project) until submission (9 th September 2014) 6
