Final Exam Preparation Tutorials 23-24

Look at the instructions for the exam. How do you plan to spend your time? What questions do you have about the exam? Do you have any helpful strategies?

Write a word summary of the writer's argument. Your summary should identify the main claim and key arguments. Use your own words as far as possible. You have to use the in-text citation when you make reference to the article. (25 marks) identify the main claim and key arguments Use an APA in text citation for the first sentence After that, in every sentence use reporting verbs or other phrases to demonstrate you are paraphrasing the author’s ideas. Use appropriate connecting words Focus on the author’s argument (MC and KAs) and demonstrate that the KAs support the MC.

Summary Rubric

Identify and paraphrase clearly any THREE key arguments used by the writer to support his main claim. Evaluate the key arguments. You should identify the form of the argument, state a well-articulated thesis on the quality of the argument and defend your evaluation with reasons. (75 marks) You will be evaluated in a manner similar to assignment one (see the rubric).

Section b) format Evaluation of KA1 a complete essay (introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, conclusion) Evaluation of KA2 a complete essay (introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, conclusion) Evaluation of KA3 a complete essay (introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, conclusion)

Comparing Inductive and Deductive Arguments DeductiveInductive The premises have some logical relationship which leads to a conclusion. Specific examples (the premises) lead to a general conclusion. If the argument is well structured (valid) AND the premises are true, then the conclusion MUST be true. If the argument is well structured (cogent) AND the premises are true, then the conclusion is PROBABLY true. If the argument is VALID and the premises are TRUE, then we can say the deductive argument is SOUND. If the argument is COGENT and the premises are TRUE, then we can say the inductive argument is STRONG. Two or more premises are required. One or more premises are required.

Definitional Claims Claim: x is y where y is a larger category Examples: Lin is a true Singaporean. Drinking coffee is a harmful behaviour. The lottery is really a tax on the unintelligent.

Definitional Claims How do prove a definitional claim? First look at the criteria of the definition: “true Singaporean” 1) speaks Singlish 2) eats chicken rice 3) lives in Singapore Are these acceptable criteria? Second, does Lin match these criteria? THIS IS A DEDUCTIVE ARGUMENT.

Find the main claim Look at the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs. What do you think is the main claim? Discuss in a small group. Hint: for this article focus on how the subheadings relate to the title.

A2 and Topic Sentences In your A2 group, look at the first paragraph of your problem section for A2. What is the main idea of the paragraph? Do you have an appropriate topic sentence for that paragraph? Can you suggest a good topic sentence for that paragraph? Repeat this with the next paragraph.
