Space Race 1957-1975

Sputnik/Muttnik Sputnik 1 launched by U.S.S.R. into space in 1957 First man-made satellite in space Sputnik 2 launched later in year Carried female dog, Laika, however she was put to sleep seeing as there was no way to return her safely to Earth. Later evidence showed she died after liftoff from stress and high temperatures. America nicknames Sputnik 2 Muttnik because of Laika.

American Reaction Americans were upset about losing the space race to Russia NASA was developed in 1958  Americans feared that Sputnik could launch nuclear warheads  This fear eventually lead to Duck and Cover drills and Bomb Shelters

Duck and Cover Americans feared that Sputnik could launch bombs, so citizens were taught to duck and cover when they heard the bomb siren or saw a bright white flash. This tactic was to try and help protect you in the event of a nuclear warhead attack. A Duck and Cover movie was shown to kids in school. http://www.prankcallsunlimited.com/freesound2/Alarm02.wav.

Bomb shelters If the bomb shelters had to be used, people were told to stay their for at least 14 days. A small room that people would build in the basement of their house. When the air strike siren would go off or there was a white flash, people would go into their bomb shelter to try and stay safe. Stocked food, water, and games

Monkeys in Space Animals were first launched in space because scientists wanted to see if a living organism could survive in space. On June 11, 1948, a V-2 Blossom launched into space from White Sands, New Mexico carrying Albert I, a rhesus monkey. Two more monkeys were launched after the first launch. The first monkey died on impact and the second one survived.

Apollos The Apollo program was designed to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth. During the first Apollo launch there was a tragic loss of three astronauts. Six of the missions (Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17) achieved this goal. http://www.prankcallsunlimited.com/freesound2/Alarm02.wav.

U.S. Man in space July 20, 1969 Neil A. Armstrong took the first step on the Moon. Buzz Aldrin joined Neil Armstrong on the moon. Their spacecraft met with the Columbia which carried Michael Collins.
