M. Gilchriese Work Plan W. Miller iTi M. Cepeda, S. Dardin, M. Gilchriese, C. Haber, R. Post LBNL February 6, 2007

M. Gilchriese 2 Prototype Recap Slightly squashed tube –Requires less development(with CGL adhesive, baseline) –Sufficient for mounting silicon/electronics for critical electrical performance evaluation –Use to debug fabrication and for non- destructive mechanical tests Round tube with graphite foam –Requires more development to figure out how best to bond foam to tube(and tube size) – see next page –To extent believe CO2 is likely coolant candidate, doing this second works out some of the bugs in fabrication with squashed tube stave

M. Gilchriese 3 Graphite Foam Just starting this(last week) First trial is POCO foam sample machined to current dimensions bonded to round tube Learning how to machine More samples in progress Properties via link on wiki Very recent thermal calculations indicate can reduce tube OD(eg. 2.8 mm calculated to be OK) Tradeoff possible between tube OD and foam machining practicalities. Impact on radiation length small.

M. Gilchriese 4 Tooling Vacuum and other tooling for assembly of stave “core” –Design complete(see wiki for models and drawings) –Shop fabrication largely complete. Pictures will appear on wiki –Modifications inevitable as we go through process “Tooling” and procedures for layup of facings and other parts –Has been some time since we did this(years) –Reconfiguring pixel construction area, finding old tooling –Get autoclave and cutting going again –Just in progress, will take some weeks given other demands Tooling for silicon detector and hybrid placement and wire bonding –Concepts sketched –Models/drawings just getting underway

M. Gilchriese 5 Stave Mechanics Fabrication Qualification and test samples(partial list) –Facing layup samples(remember how to do this) –Honeycomb bonding samples – need trial although similar done before –Foam bonding samples - started –Shear modulus samples Facings+honeycomb Facings+honeycomb+tube(squashed) Facings+honeycomb+tube+graphite foam Thermal performance samples –Roughly 35 cm long. Parallel tube(not U-tube) –Squashed tube first. Graphite foam-round tube later –Heater configuration and type is TBD. Production – 3 total full-length –Full-length, squashed tube(1) -> Non-destructive mechanical tests -> Carl for silicon loading –Full-length, round tube(1) -> Non-destructive mechanical tests -> RAL for silicon or ? –3 rd full length(1). Tube type TBD later -> thermal/mechanical tests?
