Lesson 10-2 Pages Making Circle Graphs

What you will learn! How to construct and interpret circle graphs.

Circle graph

What you really need to know! A graph used to compare parts of a whole is called a circle graph. In a circle graph, the percents add up to 100. When percents are not given, you must first determine what part of the whole each item represents.

Example 1: In a survey, a group of middle school students were asked to name their favorite sport. The results are shown in the table. Make a circle graph of the data. SportPercent Football30% Basketball25% Baseball22% Tennis8% Other15%

SportPercent Degrees of Circle Football30% 360 x.3 = 108° Basketball25% 360 x.25 = 90° Baseball22% 360 x.22 = 79.2° Tennis8% 360 x.08 = 28.8° Other15% 360 x.15 = 54°

15% Other 30% Football 25% Basketball 22% Baseball 8% Tennis

Example 2: Gina has the following types of movies in her DVD collection. Make a circle graph of the data. Type of Movie Number Action24 Comedy15 Science Fiction 7

Type of Movie Number Action24 Comedy15 Science Fiction 7Percent 52% (0.52) 33% (0.33) 15% (0.15) Degrees 187° 119° 54°

52% Action 33% Comedy 15% Science Fiction

Example 3: The circle graph shows the percent of voters in a town who are registered with a political party. Use the graph to describe the voters in this town.

Independent/ Others 3% Republicans 42% Democrats 55% More than half are Democrats and only a very few are Independents.
