Chapter 1 Section 2 Review Page 16 Questions 1-8

1. Describe one reason that a scientist might conduct research. To explain what causes some natural phenomenon or to answer a question.

2. Identify the steps that make up scientific methods. The books answer: Ask a question Form a hypothesis Test the hypothesis or make observations Draw conclusions More Specific State the problem Gather information Form a hypothesis Perform an experiment Analyze data Draw conclusions Report results

3. Compare hypothesis to theory. A hypothesis is an idea based on observation that can be tested. A theory is an explanation based on testing and evidence that does not conflict with existing results or observations.

4. Describe how scientists test hypothesis. By following a designed experiment that usually contains one independent variable and a control.

5. Describe the difference between a dependent variable and an independent variable. An independent variable can be changed by the experimenter A dependent variable changes as a result of a change in independent variables.

6. Explain why scientific ideas that have been subject to many tests are still considered theories and not scientific laws. Some scientific ideas are still theories because they have not been shown to be true in all cases.

7. Summarize how scientific methods contribute to the development of modern science. By forming a framework that all scientists follow to establish scientific truth.

8. Explain how technology can affect scientific research. Technological development may lead to new and useful tools that help scientists explore areas they previously could not explore.
