IIIrd BCWC Tychy (Poland), 19th-21st May 2017

Tychy Tychy is a city in Silesia, Poland, approximately 20 kilometers (12 mi) south of Katowice. Situated on the southern edge of the Upper Silesian industrial district, within the Silesian Voivodeship, a province consisting of 71 regional towns and cities. Tychy is well known for its brewing industry, which dates back to the 17th century.

Originally established as a small agricultural settlement on the medieval trade route between Oświęcim and Mikołów, Tychy was first documented in 1467. In 1629 the first trace of serious economic activity was recorded in the shape of the Książęcy Brewery, which is now one of the largest breweries in Poland. "New City" was designated by the Polish government in 1950 and deliberately located near to Katowice with the intention that it would not be a self-sustaining city. Tychy is the largest of the so-called "new towns" in Poland and was built from 1950 to 1985, to allow for urban expansion in the southeast of the Upper Silesian industrial region. Several great factories are located in Tychy such as Fiat car factory, GM Powertrain Poland factory producing automobile engines for General Motors. The „Tyskie” beer is produced in Tychy, by Kompania Piwowarska, a subsidiary of the multinational brewing company SABMiller. It is reportedly one of the best selling brands of beer in Poland, well know all over the world.

Tyskie Brewery & Brovarium

Tyskie beer has been on sale since 1629 Tyskie beer has been on sale since 1629. The first brewery was founded by Princes of Promnitz who resided in a nearby castle in Pszczyna. The brewery, then called "Fürstliche Brauerei in Tichau", produced three kinds of beer: mailings, yeast and tableware. Prince Jan Henryk XI rebuilt the brewery 1861, he introduced a steam engine. Production rose to 100.000 hectoliters a year ranking the brewery among the largest beer producers in Europe. Many of today’s brewery buildings date back to this time. The first beers were light and were sold under the Książęce brand. The brewery was electrified in 1891 and was linked to the railway network in 1894. The Second World War left the brewery almost ruined: it slowly recovered. At the start of the 1990s the Tyskie brewery was rapidly modernising. A new bottling and dispatching plant went into operation in June 1998 and the brewery began work on restoring the historic factory buildings. Today the Tyskie Górny Śląsk brewery is owned by Kompania Piwowarska, itself a subsidiary of SABMiller established in Poland in 1999 as a result of the merger of two SABMiller owned Polish breweries, this one and the Lech Brewery Wielkopolski in Poznań. The Tyskie Brewing Museum or Tyskie Brovarium is a museum established in 2004.

Citizen Brewery

The Citizen Brewery is located to the west from the railway station in Tychy – exactly on the area, which was bought by the Brieger Brauerai Aktien Gesselschaft brewing company in 1895. The Citizen Brewery, with starting of beer production in 1898, quickly happened to compete with the biggest brewery of that time in Europe - Tychy Prince Brewery. The place was not badly harmed in the Second World War so it was possible to reopen it just after the liberation. The major role in this process played the brewery workers, who did their best to rebuild it. The malt production was resumed in 1945 and the beer production started five years later. On February 1945 the brewery was nationalized. It was dependent to the Tychy Prince Brewery until 1949, then, until 1950, it worked as an independent company subjected to National Union of the Brewing Industry in Zabrze. In years 1951 – 1975 The Citizen Brewery was a part of the Tyskie Breweries and later it was owned by the Upper Silesia Breweries. On January 1980 it became a part of Breweries in Tychy. The Citizen Brewery was closed in 1999 and was sold to private investors.
