Advancement Plan

What is the purpose of the Scout Advancement Plan? Better boys become better men – Character – Citizenship – Physical Fitness.

“The Scout advancement plan is designed to encourage Scouts to accomplish a progressive series of learning experiences in the areas of citizenship, character, and personal fitness objectives of the Boy Scout Program. It provides for measuring and recognizing these experiences.”

Advancement is part of the Troop Program

Participation does not equal advancement, but Participation is necessary for advancement.

Individual demonstration of skill or knowledge equals advancement.

Goals of a Badge Lord Baden-Powell felt there were two goals of a badge. Q: what are these goals?

Q: What is the Merit Badge procedure? 1 st and foremost, read the Merit Badge pamphlet. Get application from the SM (blue card) SM signs if approved Gets counselor name Scouts contact counselor and makes initial appointment Never go alone – use the buddy system! Make additional appointments as necessary

Counselor signs application keeps one part for his/her records Scout returns the completed application to the SM SM verifies the application Advancement Chairman reports completed applications to the Council Service Center

Badge is obtained Badge is presented to the Scout at the next Troop Meeting Presentation of Merit Badge card with a portion of the blue card attached, is made at next Court of Honor

Scout Personal Records Every Scout should retain their cards and certificates in case there is an error in the central records Baseball card collector sheets work well for this

Advancement Report Turned in to Council office or Scout Shop Mail In-person
