Why is such an information system important? The University can help archive and make available community relevant research that can assist local participants and link to other outreach activities. Maintaining communication between the university and the community can be made easier through better online tools. A shared information systems can be used to convene many of the different players working in community settings and help shape a common agenda. University researchers often do not know what other campus initiatives overlap with their own geographically, substantively, or both. University can provide access to data and other information that can help in local community development work. Presents the initiative to potential funders, political decisionmakers and other influential audiences

Immediate and Long Term Data Opportunities UCLA in the Community Directory—updated electronically on line, regularized cycle. May include database on key university partners. Searchable by keywords and possibly mapping. Also, perhaps a database coordinated links section for all UCLA (and other?) research institutes and departmental programs that address LA issues. LA Community Data Base Faculty and Student research both completed and ongoing that address issues of LA and its constituent communities. New Research work submitted on line for inclusion. Searchable by keywords and possibly mapping. LA Research Projects and Findings Database Data that assists researchers, public officials, agencies, private agencies, and others in analyzing LA. An online information system to make data meaningful and accessible at all levels. Primary content could include new Census 2000 data, tract finder with links to other online data sets, aerial photos, location of K-12 educational facilities, transfer colleges and universities, LA Times historic photo archive. Searchable by keyword, census tracts, zip code, city level, council districts, other political jurisdictions and mapping interface.) LA Information Portal Online information/communication tool to be used for CERC and other neighborhood-based initiatives. Must be under leadership of approved UCLA faculty members or administrators. Dual system public domain with separate password protected system for discussion and dialogue among faculty and with community. Online tool that enables communities to map their own areas and integrate information with other online data bases for community-based improvement projects in health, housing, community development, educational outreach etc. LA Community Building Information System
