Hughes Elementary We EMPOWER the future!

 School hours – 7:45-2:45  The doors to the school open at 7:20.  Breakfast is served from 7:20-7:35  Students should be in seats and ready to learn by 7:45 Tardies

 Progress Reports and Report Cards  Weekly Class Newsletters-electronically unless you let the teacher know you want a paper version  Principal’s Weekly Newsletter  Check out our Web sites for information!  If we have your address than we can you school and class information. NISD is going paperless

 Students daily and 6-week grades can be viewed online at any time.  Attendance is also available online.  Can set up notifications  First grade students will not receive a report card until the 2 nd 6 weeks.  First grade students are given numerical grades. Internet Grade Viewing

 We are a Love and Logic campus  We utilize Preferred Activity Time (P.A.T.) as a method to reinforce positive behavior choices.  Students earn Dojo points in some rooms to earn P.A.T. each Friday afternoon.  Please initial the calendar each night. If a student receives 2 notes on their calendar (a warning is always given) it will result in the loss of a letter towards a reward given at the end of each 6 weeks.  If there are no notes that means the student had a great day.  All instruction is at student’s academic level.  Workshop Model of Instruction  Reading  Writing  Math  Science Pushing Students to Excel

 Personal Goal Sheets  Small group instruction based on needs  Students practice concepts using books at their reading level.  Students perfect writing based on their specific needs, levels, and goals.  Students share out their thinking at the end of each work period.  Students need to leave 1 st grade reading at a level I, minimum expectation  Students need to leave 1 st grade writing at a stage 6 or higher Reader’s & Writer’s Workshop

 Concepts are introduced  Students explore a variety of ways to solve problems through games and practice within small groups, partners, or as individuals.  Students share out their thinking showing a variety of complexity.  We need to work on facts-we need your help with math facts at home too Math Workshop

 Workshop model that is structured like Language Arts and Math  Inquiry-based  5 E Model  Engage, Explore, Explanation  Elaborate, and Extend Science Workshop

 3 rd Year for the Million Word Challenge  First graders have a goal of 100 books.  To earn credit for a book, the book must at the student’s “just right” reading level!  Read at home and school  Use Reading Logs  Our Million Word Kickoff is Oct. 9 th at 8:00 a.m.  Awards will be given at the 6 Weeks Award s assemblies to students that have met their goal for the grading period  Celebration (more information when available) Million Word Challenge

 Students should read at least 20 minutes every night. Log this reading for the MWC.  Math-Practice and repetition are very important.  Students are expected to be practicing addition and subtraction facts to 10.  Assigned homework will be used to practice concepts learned in class.  Homework should take no more than 10 minutes. Benefits of Homework

 Making sure my child is rested and prepared for school each day.  Make sure your child is at school and on time for school.  Knowing how your child is doing by communicating with the teacher by checking your child’s folder, , in person or by phone.  Monitor your child’s homework and make sure study time is in a quiet place.  Be an active participant in your child’s education. How you can help your child!

 Please work on shoe tying at home.  Help your child learn how to open lunch and snack items.  Help your child bring folders and guided reading books to class EVERY DAY!!!  We work during work time, play during play time. If your child has unfinished work this work may need to be completed at home or at P.A.T. Independence
