The Patriot Act Enacted in 2001 as a response to September 11 th attacks. Enabled the government to limit certain civil liberties, basic rights and freedoms, to ensure American safety against terrorists.

Debate: ACLU vs. the Government The Government and the ACLU are debating the provisions of the Patriot Act. Half of you will be part of the Government. You are defending these provisions and stating they are necessary to keep the US safe. Half of you will be part of the ACLU. You will be stating that these are uneccesary provisions that are invading on constitutional rights for no good.

Debate In order to make sure our debate goes smoothly we are going to do the following things: 1 when you are one of the 3 people in the center, you need to use the sentence starters. Each group in the center will be there for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes we will rotate. Each person will start off at a 55. Every time you talk and engage in the discussion/use information from the handouts in your points you will get 15 points. That means to get a 100 you will need to talk 3 times. Moderator will be responsible for calling on one person at a time, keeping order, and asking leading questions. I will act as assistant moderator.
