Hermit crabs like to live in old sea snail or mollusk shells. First they look for an empty one that is just the right size. Then they move in! Hermit crabs have an exoskeleton that covers the front part of their bodies. This hard covering keeps it safe. Its abdomen and tail, on the other hand, are soft. This is why the crabs must live inside a shell. The shell protects these tender parts of their bodies. There are more than 500 types of hermit crabs. Some live in the ocean. Others are terrestrial. They live on land. While these crabs grow, their shells do not. Soon all hermit crabs outgrow their homes. Then what do they do? The same thing people do!
