Teacher Leaders … Who Me? Jenna Hallman

TEACHER LEADER

30 years experience PhD Not me! National Presenter Author

“Research on teacher leadership indicates that teacher fail to self-identify as teacher leaders (Hanuscin et al., 2012) and are unable to recognize the teacher leader roles they assume and the teacher leader attributes they possess (Roby, 2012).” Hanuscin, D. L., Rebello, C. M., & Sinha, S. (2012). Supporting the development of science teacher leaders: Where do we begin? Science Educator, 21(1), 12–18. Roby, D. E. (2012). Teacher leader human relations skills: A comparative study. Education, 132(4), 898–906.

“A definition for teacher leadership remains elusive, although the literature suggests numerous ways to identify teacher leaders. Teacher leader roles are also ill defined. The combination of the lack of certainty in these two areas creates a challenge for the education profession.”

What do teacher leaders do?? According to ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) there are ten roles for teacher leaders: Resource Provider Instructional Specialist Curriculum Specialist Classroom Specialist Learning Facilitator Mentor School Leader Data Coach Catalyst for Change Learner http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/sept07/vol65/num01/Ten-Roles-for-Teacher-Leaders.aspx In their research, Katzenmeyer and Moller (2001) described a survey by Hewitt-Gervais (1996) that asked teacher leaders to name their various roles. During the first year of administration, the survey results yielded 167 different teacher leader roles. This number increased to 182 roles the following year.

Instructional leadership means sharing great teaching. Policy leadership requires teachers to take active role in the shaping and implementation of educational policy. Association leadership refers to the act of leading critical groups towards desired change.
