Better eye health for all Six simple steps to help keep your eyes and vision healthy

Step 1. Eat right for good sight Nutrients found in many fruit and vegetables and fatty acids derived from fish, nuts and oils can help protect your sight

Step 2. Quit smoking Smokers are up to four times more likely to develop macular degeneration – the UK’s leading cause of sight loss – than non-smokers

Step 3. Watch your weight Damage to blood vessels in the eye caused by excess body weight has been linked to the onset of glaucoma

Step 4. Cover up Cumulative exposure to the sun’s UV light increases your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration

Step 5. Be screen smart Avoid eye strain by using the rule, especially if you’re using a computer for long periods of time. Look 20 feet in front of you every 20 minutes for 20 seconds

Step 6. Get tested Get your eyes checked every two years even if you think your vision is perfect Early detection is vital to prevent avoidable sight loss
