The role of M.V. Lomonosov in the development of geography. Lomonosov had a particular predilection to sciences, knowing the surface of the earth, and he left in them an imprint. He is considered an outstanding geographer, who made many new ideas that are important for the development of physical geography and cartography. A lot of questions were decided by himself, questions that relate to atmospheric phenomena, landforms, its land cover, permafrost. In all his works he presented the idea of variability of the world and the relationship of phenomena and processes. Lomonosov had a particular predilection to sciences, knowing the surface of the earth, and he left in them an imprint. He is considered an outstanding geographer, who made many new ideas that are important for the development of physical geography and cartography. A lot of questions were decided by himself, questions that relate to atmospheric phenomena, landforms, its land cover, permafrost. In all his works he presented the idea of variability of the world and the relationship of phenomena and processes.

In an often quoted famous phrase of Lomonosov about "Russian power" there is an important idea of the scientist: "Russian power will grow by Siberia and the Northern Ocean and reach to the main European settlements in Asia and in America." This phrase proves the necessity and possibility of establishing a regular maritime traffic between the ports of Archangel and the Pacific Ocean (the future of the Northern Sea Route).

It is known that Lomonosov strongly supported the holding of the Great Northern Expeditions for studying and further development of the vast northern territories. He developed the special questionnaire for the participants of expeditions to identify and describe the specifics of natural conditions and resources, the life of indigenous peoples, etc.

In his later years he was engaged in scientific rationale and organizational support for a large naval expedition under the command of V.J. Chichagov. This expedition was a major milestone in the development of the North. By joint efforts of scientists and sailors was realized for a long time ahead the heroic attempt of successful penetration into the central region of the Arctic Ocean, the programme of oceanographic and meteorological observations was fulfilled, there was a significant contribution to the search of the great sea route to the eastern borders of Russia.

Lomonosov was an excellent cartographer. In the maps made by himself the artist's skill cards successfully combines geographic knowledge and geographical memory.
