Act 2 Quote Analysis

Act 2 Scene 1 “Can I go forward when my heart is here? Turn back, dull earth, and find thy centre out”

Significance This quote was said by Romeo, he is acting like love is the brightness to the earth. Without love the earth is dull without it. He can not move forward without love because it is empty without it.

Act 2 Scene 1 “If love be blind, love can not hit the mark”

Significance This quote is said by Mercutio, he was being rude and saying that thinking of higher love, Romeo was missing out on easy sex

Act 2 Scene 2 “So smile the heavens upon this holy act. That after hours with sorrow chide us not”

Significance This was said by Friar Laurence, he is saying that he hopes the heavens will smile on what he is doing by marrying Romeo and Juliet. This is also foreshadowing the end of Romeo and Juliet

Act 2 Scene 2 “These violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die, like fire and powder”

Significance This is said by Friar Laurence, he is talking about the feud between the two households. He’s predicting the end of the story, where their lives are taken because of love

Act 2 Scene 3 “For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love”

Significance Perhaps when Romeo and Juliet marry, their union will change their families feuds to love

Act 2 Scene 3 “Wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast”

Act 2 Scene 3 “Wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast”

Significance Friar Laurence is warning that Romeo and Juliet are marrying too fast

Act 2 Scene 4 “If ye should lead her into God’s paradise as they say it were a gross kind of behavior”

Significance This quote shows how the nurse, when speaking to Romeo, cares for Juliet as a mother

Act 2 Scene 4 “Tybalt, the kinsman of old Capulet, hath sent a letter to his father’s house”

Significance This quote, spoken by Benvolio, foreshadows the conflict about to occur between families

Act 2 Scene 5 “I am weary, give me leave awhile. Fie how my bones ache! What jaunt have I had”

Significance The nurse is speaking to Juliet and showing her sense of humour by withholding the information about Romeo.
