Its importance for reading and writing. Phonics Its importance for reading and writing.
Key Principles Sounds are represented by letters. A sound can be represented by one or more letters e.g. a, p, sh, th, ee, igh etc. The same sound can be represented by different letters e.g. rain, may, lake. The same letters can make different sounds e.g. mean, deaf.
Reading using phonics pin, p – i – n , pin shop, sh – o – p, shop Phonics helps children recognise sounds in a word. They then blend these sounds together to pronounce a word. For example: pin, p – i – n , pin shop, sh – o – p, shop cheek, ch – ee – k, cheek Increased practice helps children become more confident with blending and thus more fluent when reading.

TRICKY WORDS Words that are not phonically decodeable e.g. was, the, I. The best way of approaching words like these is to practice them on a regular basis with your child. In time they will recognise them by sight.
Spelling using phonics When a child is writing a sentence they use their phonics to sound out a word. Children will chop up (segment) a word to spell it. For example: The class went to the shop.
