The Internet will switch versions of IP

Projection based on 3 years

Allocation of IPv4 /8 blocks per month by IANA note: polynomial & exponential projection models are presented to satisfy community preferences Smoothed allocation rate of /8’s per month from IANA to the RIR’s; averaging 12 months forward and 12 months back. Consumption rate projection models based on the data from 2000 onward. Widely quoted 20 – 40 year IPv4 lifetime projections included the declining consumption of 1995 – 2000 as CIDR rolled out.

IANA & RIR totals & projections (showing cumulative RIR pool holdings at ~18 months - IANA policy is 12-24)

Allocations & projections by RIR

Distribution of IPv4 addresses by /8 23.8% remaining IANA allocated 25 /8’s between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 5, 2006 typical RIR re-allocation period 9-12 months

Distribution of “Central” registry

Distribution of “Various” component of the Central registry

/8’s equivalent’s allocated prior to establishment of the current RIR structure
