International Centre for Geohazards (ICG) Oslo, Norway The ICG is a research cooperation between 3 research institutes and 2 universities in Norway. Funded by the Norwegian research foundation Partners: NGI / NGU / NORSAR / UiO / NTNU Specialising in: Geo-sciences, including geotechnical engineering, geology, geophysics, seismology, avalanche and tsunami The ICG has the combined capacity of the partner research institutes and university resources. >200 engineers, scientists and educators at Masters or PhD level TEWS Info Day, 31 Jan 2006, Paris

Potential Interest/Contribution to TEWS The implementation of an early warning system must include a tie-in to the fundamental geo-processes the system is designed to monitor. The ICG has in-house capacity for – –modelling of tsunamis – –processing and interpretation of seismic data – –instrumentation and monitoring systems – –marine/subsea operations and equipment installation – –evaluation of slope stability subsea, on land and in coastal zones The goals of the ICG include capacity building and education, and can contribute to training programs and establishment of local expertise in developing countries Contact point – –Dr. James M. Strout, – –ICG Project Manager (Prevention and mitigation of geohazards) – –at NGI: Deputy division director: Instrumentation and geophysics division – – – –Tel: – – – –Partners:

Desired Level of Cooperation The ICG is willing to participate – –as a work package leader (if appropriate) – –as a technical partner within a work package Type of activity that ICG can contribute to – –case studies – –providing scientific/technical input related to the geo-processes, tsunami models, inundation and run-up predictions, tertiary effects – –design and implementations of instrumentation/sensor systems Note: The ICG is a research partnership - EU project contracts would be made directly with the relevant ICG partner(s) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute is the leading partner of the ICG
