Use of Technology in Course and Clinical Experiences The University of Toledo UToledo. UTeach.UTouch the Future (UT 3 ) Program Add Corporate Logo Here
Technology to Transform Science and Mathematics Teaching Technology can support: students in actively constructing deep understanding of important concepts, student inquiry by expanding the range of questions that can be investigated, the types of information that can be collected, the kinds of data representations that can be displayed, and the products that students can create to demonstrate their understanding.
Program Needs Teachers need to be guided in learning both the technologies and how to use these tools explicitly to support student learning. Mentoring is critical to new teacher’s professional development and retention in the profession.
UToledo. UTeach.UTouch the Future (UT 3 ) US Department of Education Teacher Quality Enhancement Partnership grant for $6 Million dollars –designed to foster collaboration that increases the capacity to recruit and prepare teachers in the high need areas of science and math (especially in urban settings), –increase the number of candidates who major in these high need areas (especially minorities), –improve the quality of the initial teacher preparation programs to meet high-quality standards, and –improve the quality of teaching of science and math with the aim of increasing student achievement.
Technology Goals in (UT 3 ) 1) Integrate technology tools that enhance instruction, and 2) Use technology to improve knowledge of and reflection on teaching and learning.
Goal 1: Technology Tools to Enhance Instruction Support active engagement with phenomena (i.e., microcomputer-based laboratories (MBLs), probes, hand held devices, visualization tools, and simulations) Support using and applying knowledge (i.e., data collection and building models) Are a source of information (i.e., WWW and digital libraries) Support the creation of multiple representations (i.e., PowerPoint, digital cameras, and video) Support the creation of learning communities (i.e. telecommunication, , and listservs)
Goal 2: Technology to Improve Knowledge of and Reflection on Teaching and Learning TFN will enable pre-service teachers on campus to interact with live classrooms and mentor teachers. TFN will improve teacher’s knowledge of and reflection on teaching and learning. –Methods courses will be linked with field-based experiences so that pre- service and practicing teachers can form a learning community that discusses pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). TFN will make it possible for university science and mathematics and education faculty to interact with and support science and mathematics teachers in their classrooms. TFN will enable faculty from both the COE and A&S to supervise students during clinical experiences.
