Welcome and Conceptual Overview ATHA Specialized Training on International Humanitarian Law May 31, 2010 Stockholm, Sweden

Course Objectives  Enhance theoretical and functional knowledge of IHL  Provide deeper understanding of the mechanical aspects of the law in practice  Develop capacity for flexible, principled, and resilient strategies for protection based on IHL  Develop and refine a critical perspective on IHL in order to address current challenges to its application

Methodology  Presentation of key principles and rules of IHL  Emphasis on practical examples through simulations  Presentation of various perspectives on challenges  Open space for critical debates

Measures of Success  Ability to apply substantive IHL analysis to humanitarian problems  Ability to identify applicable rules and develop proper legal argumentation  Enhanced capacity to engage in debates on relevance of IHL in contemporary conflicts
