Earthquake in El Salvador January 13, 2001

FACTS San Miguel Epicenter was about 60 miles southwest of san Miguel, the focus depth was at 60 km, the magnitude was between 7.6-7.9. Stricking at 10:34 pm Taking with it about 900 lives and leaving 5,500 injured.

MORE FACTS About 300,000 homes and buildings destroyed or damaged. Most of the departments around the coast were effected but mostly it was usulutan, la libertad, and san Miguel. 8 people in Guatemala were killed.

EVEN MORE FACTS The earthquake caused a land slide in Santa Tecla causing most of the deaths. Later on an after shock measuring 5.7 magnitude was felt on January 15 about more than 2,500 aftershocks hit el Salvador by February 13.

THE AFTERMATH Costing 7 million dollars in damages to water systems clean water and sanitation became a concern due to so much destruction, many people were living in the streets, which could cause the spread of disease.

MAP OF EVENT Occurring mainly along the pacific coast, and affecting a bit around Honduras and Guatemala. As you can see el Salvador is very small but is one of the most populated countries in the world per square foot.

P map with plates Occurring around the cocos plate which is one of the most unstable and destructive plates. Nevertheless the magnitude of earthquakes around this plate don’t exceed 7.9

Pt diagram of cause of event “El Salvador sits atop the western part of the Caribbean plate, where it is overriding the Cocos plate, it was likely due to complicated stresses in the Caribbean plate .” said so by the USGS

Where else could this event occur? the areas at risk where an event similar to the earthquake in elsalvador, would most likely be around the Juan De Fuca Plate Because just like the cocos plate it id overriding another plate, which in this case is the north American plate.

How can the u.s take precaution? The government could send workers to talk to the people that live around the Juan De Fuca plate About what to do incase of an earthquake since they are most likely to experience one. Also how to develop an Evacuation plan.
