Abou t ME

Librarian Certification Kentucky has had a law since 1935 requiring certification for library staff with the goal of having educated people working with the citizens of Kentucky in their local libraries.

Who Has To Be Certified? Any full-time (and sometimes part-time) employees who provide library information service should be certified. This includes, but is not limited to: Library Directors Branch Managers Department Managers Bookmobile/Outreach Librarians Library Assistants

Levels of Certification There are three (3) levels of certification: Library Experience Paraprofessional Professional All levels of certification require college coursework in the field of Library Science.

Certification Renewal Certificates are valid for 5 years and must be renewed upon expiration. Certification renewal requires 50 to 100 Contact Hours of continuing education credit in a 5 year period. Library Experience (50 Contact Hours) Paraprofessional (100 Contact Hours) Professional (100 Contact Hours) That’s 10 to 20 Contact Hours a year or 1 to 2 hours a month.

Public Library Institute Held at KDLA for two weeks (Spring & Fall) 3 full and 2 half days of face to face learning, collaborating, & networking For Public Library staff working on their Temporary certification Counts as one 3 hour college credit class Can count on a good & educational time!

New Director’s Orientation Full day jammed packed with information Directors need to KDLA Opportunity to learn what is required of a director and how KDLA can help Network with other new directors!

Director’s Day Out Chance for Directors to get away from the library for a day & a half. Usually held at a KY State Park. Get together with other public library directors to learn about new topics and discuss reoccurring ones. Network and get to know other directors.

Summer Reading & Programming Conference 2 or 3 day conference in Louisville or Lexington. For all library staff!! Concentrates on Summer Reading, Programming, and Outreach. Learn from peers and experts in their fields about how to better yourself and the job that you do. Meet and network with other public library staff from across the Commonwealth.
