Agroforests in Humid Tropical Africa Technical Session 2 WCA 2 Nairobi August 2009

Agroforests in the Humid Tropics A successional agroforestry system –First phase: crops (with young trees interplanted), –Mature phase: a diversified forest cover with commercial trees as canopy (e.g. rubber, damar), or as understorey (e.g. coffee, cocoa) At the « forest » end of the agroforestry systems range…

Agroforests in the Humid Tropics Rubber: peneplain, Sumatra (1991) Fruits/spices: West Sumatra (1984) Damar: South-West Sumatra (1983) Benzoin: North Sumatra (1996)

Agroforests in the Humid Tropics Coffee: Ethiopia (2009) Cocoa: Cameroun, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea… (since 1998) Coffee: Guinea (2007)

Agroforests in Humid Tropical Africa: Why are they important? They are both a source of monetary income and a source for a variety of products used in household consumption… They have an immense environmental value, –for soil protection and water-flow regulation (multistrata cover), –for carbon sequestration (tree component), –and above all for biodiversity conservation (extending the niches favourable to many forest species)…a quality unique among all cropping sytems!

Aims of Session 2: Agroforests in Humid Tropical Africa State of the art Define questions for future research –Develop a detailed data base: who, where, what, when, how… –Detail environmental, production and economic performances… –Identify points where research can help improve existing systems… –Others… Develop an international research network… Inform the global and African public about the existence of agroforests so that this exceptional cropping system can be taken into account for rural development and policy planning…

Call for papers: plan for a special issue early 2010 of “Trees, Forests, and Livelihoods” on Agroforests in Humid Tropical Africa
