Story 1: Vivian’s Sunday Sundae Directions: Your group has been given numberlines and a stack of direction cards. On each card, you will find a description of what happens to Vivian the bird during a certain time period. After reading the card, draw a picture on your number line where Vivian is in relation to the origin (0 cm mark).

Card #1 It is 11 o’clock in the morning and Vivian is sitting outside her birdhouse (0cm) enjoying the sun.

Card #2 Suddenly feeling a bit hungry, Vivian flies +5 cm away from the house in search of something to eat.

Card #3 Vivan spots something! She continues until she is +10 cm away from the house and sees a couple of fat Earthworms sitting outside enjoying the sun as well.

Card #4 Vivian turns around and saw another worm, rushes and does a nose-dive and sweeps down to the first worm (-20 cm away from her tree), enjoying her first snack.

Card #5 She stays in the same spot, waits for the second worm to arrive at the same spot (-20 cm), and easily grabs another snack.

Card #6 Of course, Vivian isn’t the only animal outside ready for lunch! A predator starts getting closer to Vivian’s nest. Vivian zooms towards her nest to rescue her babies. She is half-way there (-10 cm).

Card #7 Finally Vivian makes it back (0cm) She is able to get back to the nest, scare away the attacker, and protect her babies. All is well! …the end!

Story 2: Horton Hears a Who! Directions: You group has been given numberlines and a stack of direction cards. On each card you will find a description of what happens to Horton during a certain time period. You are to draw a picture on your number line where Horton is in relation to the origin ( 0 cm mark). Note--this is “relative position” since we cannot really fit an entire jungle in 50 cm!!

Card #1 In the Jungle of Nool on one afternoon, Horton the Elephant was splashing in a pool in his backyard (30 cm away from his house) and heard a small speck of dust talking.

Card #2 Horton was very confused, he stood in the same place (30cm mark) and stared at the speck. It turns out the speck of dust is actually a tiny planet, home to a city called “Who-Ville”.

Card #3 Horton stood in the same spot (30cm away from his house), spoke with the Mayor of Who-ville, who asked Horton to protect them from harm.

Card #4 Horton walked into the forest (-10 cm mark) to find the Vlad Vladikoff, the Wickersham Brothers and the Sour Kangaroo and tried to convince them about the Whos.

Card #5 Horton finally arrived deep in the forest (-20 cm mark) where Vlad Vladikoff, the Wickersham Brothers and the Sour Kangaroo were. However, they did not believe Horton and started tormenting him.

Card #6 Vlad Vladikoff, the Wickersham Brothers and the Sour Kangaroo started chasing Horton, pushing him into a cage (0cm mark).

Card #7 Horton convinced the Whos to all play their part and made loud noise, added volume together so the other animals can hear them. Now convinced of the Whos’ existence, Horton’s neighbors vow to help him protect the tiny community and they all went back to Horton’s house and celebrated! (30 cm) …the end!

Story 3: A Bug’s Journey! Directions: You group has been given numberlines and a stack of direction cards. On each card you will find a description of what happens to a bug during a certain time period. You are to draw a bug on your number line where the bug is in relation to the origin ( 0 cm mark).

Card #1 A small bug named Dot was hanging out under a nice shaded leaf and relaxing that is 20 cm away from it’s colony.

Card #2 Dot felt the rain drop falling and decided it is time to go back to her colony and started flying back. She quickly flew to 10m away from her house to pick up some flower nectar on the way back to the house.

Card #3 After making it back to her colony, she decided to take a small nap and rested at the her house (0cm).

Card #4 Dot not only napped, but spent some time feeler wrestling her twin brother, Doyle at the house (0cm).

Card #5 Siblings Dot and Doyle were wrestling for a couple of minutes. Finally, Dot won the battle and pulled one of Doyle’s feelers off from his head! (0cm)

Card #6 Doyle cried and howled in pain, so Dot began to fly away from the house (-10 cm) to find a hiding spot before their parents come home so she won’t get in trouble.

Card #7 Eventually Dot flew so far away from home that she got lost, and got eaten by the a spider who set-up the trap -20 cm away from Dot’s colony, awaiting for any run-away teenager bugs to fall into its trap. …the end!

Story 4: Crush the Turtle Directions: You group has been given numberlines and a stack of direction cards. On each card, you will find a description of what happens to Crush the Turtle during a certain time period. You are to draw on your number line where Crush is in relation to the origin ( 0 cm mark).

Card #2 On his way to work he rescued two fish named Marlin & Dory. Marlin and Dory nearly escaped death after passing through a sea of jelly-fish (-10 cm away from Crush’s house).

Card #3 Crush was so impressed with them, he carried Marlin and Dory to ride the EAC (Eastern Australian Current, went back to his house (0cm), and started the journey so they can help find Marlin’s son, Nemo.

Card #4 The EAC carried Crush, Dory, and Marlin quickly away (25 cm from Crush’s house)and during this journey, Marlin told them about how Nemo got lost.

Card #5 They finally arrived in Sydney (30 cm away from Crush’s house) where Crush dropped Marlin off, and hung out at the harbor to wait for good news.

Card #6 At the Sydney harbor (30 cm mark), Crush heard about Nemo’s escape from the dentist’s office through a drain pipe.

Card #7 Finally, Crush met up with Dory, Nemo, and Marlin at the Sydney Harbor and saw how Nemo used his lucky fin to save Dory from the fishing net and proved to Marlin he is an independent young clown fish. …the end!
