First Aid CPR and Cardiac Arrest

What is CPR?  CPR means cardiopulmonary resuscitation  First aid technique to restore heartbeat and breathing  Someone collapses at the park. You want to give first aid (because you’re a GOOD SAMARITAN!)…What do you do?  Make sure the scene is safe  Approach the victim, ask “Are you okay?” - If they do not respond, shake their shoulders and ask again!  CALL  Check their ABC’s

ABC’s  Do you know your ABC’s?  A = Airway  Are they choking on something?  B = Breathing  Are they breathing?  C = Circulation  Can you feel a pulse?

Airway  Clear the airway!  Place on hand on victim’s forehead and one hand on their chin  Press on the forehead and lift the chin to tilt the victim’s head back  The mouth will open and the tongue will move away from the windpipe

Breathing  Keeping your hands on the victim’s head, turn your head and see if the chest rises and falls  Listen for sounds of breathing and feel for exhaled air on your cheek

What if they are not breathing?  Check the airway again  Remove anything that may be blocking it  Start CPR

Cardiopulmonary Arrest  What is it?  Cardio – dealing with the heart  Pulmonary – dealing with blood  Arrest – Stopping  Which means…Stopping of normal circulation of blood due to failure of the heart

Hands only CPR No breathing 100 beats per minute! -This type of CPR is recommended for people who are not trained rescuers.
