Catholic Church The Catholic Church was a monotheistic religion Believe in one God They believed in the holy sacraments which allowed all to participate in Christendom Baptism Communion The Spanish and Portuguese Missionaries spread Catholicism into Asia in the 16 th century trying to convert people there since most in Europe were already converted to Catholicism/Christianity. The Saint responsible for starting churches in Asia was St Paul. His letters are found in the Bible. The spread of ideas, art, religions, technologies, and languages from one culture to another is known as cultural diffusion.

Catholic Church Back in Europe, the spread of Christianity was helped with the Roman roads and shared languages. Also, the message appealed to the poor especially after the fall of the Roman Empire. A Saint that played an important role in the spread of Christianity to Ireland was St. Patrick He even used the Shamrock to explain the biblical trinity and leading the snakes out of Ireland

The New World Christianity started to spread across the Atlantic to the New World Great Britain motivation was just to expand there empire. Protestant Country (Henry VIII) No loyalty to the pope Spain’s motivation to explore the new world was to spread the power of the Catholic church In Europe, the followers of the Catholic church was dwindling in numbers. So the religion that is most associated with the spread of Christianity to Central and South America was Catholicism. France went to Canada and brought Catholicism to that region

Back in Europe In the 1500s, the Catholic Church was weakened because of the Protestant Reformation. Many New Christian Denominations were formed which the Catholic Church had less control over the people. By the 1600’s, Europe was split into 5 main religions Catholic ( Spain, Portugal, Italy, France Ireland) Lutheran ( German, Netherlands) Calvinist ( Sweden, Scotland) Anglican ( England) Huguenot ( South of France) Spanish Inquisition purpose was to get rid of all the reformers and make Spain completely Catholic.
