Category  What is neglect? Failing to do something like feed, clothe, love, care for the child

Category  What is domestic abuse?  Battering or abuse done in the family usually between husband and wife

Category  What is a mandated reporter?  Someone who must tell if they hear about abuse. Teachers, doctors, guidance counselors.

Category  What is DSS?  Department of Social Services….the place that is called when abuse is reported so they can help the child

Category  What is sexual abuse?  TRICKED or FORCED sexual contact between a child and adult or child and much older child.

Category  What is incest?  When the family member is doing the abusing.

Category  What percentage of abuse is done by someone the child knows?  80-90%

Category  What is financial abuse?  When someone controls the money of another. Doesn’t let them have money etc.

Category  What is social abuse?  When one person tries to control who the other person hangs out with etc.

Category  What are some reasons why parents abuse their children?  They were abused themselves  They might see something in the child that reminds them of themselves that they do not like  They have unrealistic goals for their children  They are stressed out and don’t know how to deal with their stress appropriately and take it out on their child  Single parents…doesn’t have any help  On drugs/drinking

Category  People who do this are more likely to abuse their family members? There is a strong correlation between doing this and abusing.  (drinking) Alcohol

Category  What happens if a mandated reporter does not tell about the abuse?  They get fined and possibly even put into jail.

Category  What does a perpetrator say to the child to discourage them from telling about the abuse?  “It’s our little secret”  If you tell I will kill your dog, etc. (threats)

Category  What must a sexual offender do when they move into a new neighborhood ?  Register online

Category  What is a cori form?  A police background check that must be done before people can work with kids…this checks for a background in abuse

Category  Why don’t kids usually tell if they are being abused?  The are embarrassed  They feel dirty  They think it’s their fault  Don’t want to get their loved one (parent, friend, babysitter) in trouble  Have been threatened so scared to tell
