East Midlands  Founding member of NEREUS-network  East Midlands are involved in the political representation of the network and share the vice- presidency with Bremen  NEREUS-Working Group »Technologies from Space Exploration » is co-chaired by the East Midlands (Dr. Richard Ambrosi)  East Midlands are involved in several EU-funded projects that were mobilized on the NEREUS- platform: THE ISSUE and the former DORIS_NET initiative (now RCO-network), ERASMUS

Why NEREUS & space exploration?  NEREUS is about bringing the benefits of space to regions, their citizens and companies  In the area of space exploration NEREUS focus is on collecting knowledge and spreading awareness and understanding how activities in this field can be exploited at regional level → for commercial purposes (spin-offs) → for scientific/educational purposes → for inspirational purposes

Region’s interest in space exploration? Space policy is a key element in the Europe 2020 Strategy The challenges linked with ambitious space exploration missions contribute to stimulate innovations which can lead to a transfer of technologies to the benefit of other sectors of the economy Space exploration is a driver for innovations in numerous non-space sectors and strengthens industrial competitiveness (e.g. robotics) Spin-offs and robotics industries, create many market opportunities primarily for SMEs and high quality employment,

What is the added value of regions ? Regions are political, economic and social decision maker and the closes level to the citizen Regions unite in their territory actors of innovation triangle (industry, SME, academia, research organisations) Regions host different economic and business communities (linking non-space sector and space sector) Regions support and host innovation stimulating structures (such as business parks, clusters, networks, etc.)
