At the end of this lesson, students will analyze how the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment shaped by the “Atlantic World” shaped 18 th century British North American colonial society and subsequent American society.

What was the Enlightenment? What was the Great Awakening?

Students will read “Whitefield Fascinates Franklin (1739)” and complete a SOAPSTone guide Students will read “Edwards Paints the Horrors of Hell (1741)” and complete a SOAPSTone guide

Research a list of accomplishments and characteristics of the Enlightenment and categorize them around common themes.

Did the Great Awakening or the Enlightenment have a greater impact on the 18 th century Atlantic World and American society from the 18 th century to the present?

Read American Pageant pgs , 68-74, 93-96, These are the sections concerning economics (mercantilism, triangular trade, salutary neglect)
