The NWS Dissemination Re-architecture Presented by: Bob Bunge Telecommunications Operations Center June 29, 2011

NWS is conducting a multi-phased assessment of its data dissemination architecture Goal: Create a forward-looking dissemination architecture utilizing emerging technology Includes all dissemination channels currently supported, such as: –NWS Telecommunications Gateway –All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio –NOAA Weather Wire –Family of Services –NOAAPORT –Emergency Managers Weather Information Network system –NWSChat –iNWS, and all web-based , and telephone services NWS seeking comments on dissemination re-architecture

33 Assessment Areas The NWS is assessing the following areas: –Data Sets –Dissemination methods –Best practices of existing dissemination systems –Operational levels of availability, timeliness, and prioritization –Service levels including expansion of Family of Services dissemination

44 Data and Dissemination Data Sets – What do you require? Dissemination methods - How do you like to obtain data? Data Input Protocols –DBNet – –FTP –HTTP/HTTPS –IP Sockets –SSH –X.25 Data Output Protocols –DBNet –FTP, sFTP, vsFTP –SCP –HTTP/HTTPs –LDM –SMTP –IP Sockets –SSH –X.25

5 Best Practices Best practices of existing dissemination systems –What existing dissemination systems do you think work well? –What suggestions do you have for improving the existing dissemination systems? –Are you or other organizations disseminating data in a more efficient manner? If so, how?

66 Operational and Service Levels Operational levels of availability, timeliness, and prioritization –What data do you need, and when do you need it? –How long should that data be made available? Service levels including expansion of Family of Services (FOS) dissemination –What improvements can be made to the current FOS dissemination methods used by your organization? –What other data products or services should be offered in the FOS program?
