12-CRS-0106 REVISED 8 FEB 2013 IEEE Society Initiative/Incubator Project for Internet of Space Tim Lee FDC Meeting 18 November 2015, New Jersey

12-CRS-0106 REVISED 8 FEB 2013 Goal: Global Internet Access from Space  Communications and Access to the Internet for information needed to improve the quality of life is being recognized as a “human right”  With ubiquitous connectivity, people are empowered to impact their own lives and of others through the sharing of ideas and enabling the exchange of information for aid, weather, medicine, education, commerce and ultimately deliver hope to the underserved peoples of the world.  Create a technical community that provides global Internet Access from a space-based or near-space platforms  To provide high-bandwidth communication services from LEO satellites, HALE platforms, aircrafts, persistent UAVs, airships etc. to areas of natural or man made disasters  To provide these services to aircrafts and ships  To provide high-speed connectivity to those 60% of the world’s population that lives in underserved regions of the world.  To provide these services to the entire globe and to operate as a backbone for IoT  To set-up such IoS links to Moon and Mars  The Internet of Space (IoS)  To provide Internet access to unreached 4.5B people

12-CRS-0106 REVISED 8 FEB 2013 Highest Priorities of IoS Tough Technical Challenges Small and micro- satellite design Manufacture and Deployment of Large LEO satellite constellations (1000 to 4000 satellites) Lower-cost alternatives Unmanned Air Systems Balloons Terrestrial Systems Affordability Frequency spectrum allocations International Regulations and Standards

12-CRS-0106 REVISED 8 FEB 2013 Where is this going in five years? 418 November 2015 From space, broadband connectivity to aircrafts and ships will be available within 1 to 3 years, to the entire globe in 3 to 5 years and to other planets (moon, Mars) within 10 to 20 years. Short Term (2015): Jumpstart a global community of interest within and external to IEEE in preparation of a full FDI proposal MTT-S, AP-S and EMC-S are on board Medium Term ( ): Build core community through workshops & special events Launch a full IoS FD Initiative Long Term (2018+): Transition to IEEE Technical Community or IEEE Technical Council
