Lydia: Willing Service

Lesson Outline Get Started No –Acts 16:11 – 15 Partner with Other Believers –Acts 16:40; Phil 1:3-8 Do What Really Matters –Phil 1:9-11

Introduction Who was someone in your church as you grew up that you remember touching your life through some service or ministry? Possible Answers –a SS teacher –a youth pastor –the minister’s wife –a camp counselor –a kids league sports coach All believers are called by God to minister to one another Today we learn about just such a person … Lydia All believers are called by God to minister to one another Today we learn about just such a person … Lydia

Here’s Where It Happened

Get Started Now Look for the results of Paul’s open air ministry Acts 16:11-15 (NIV) From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day on to Neapolis. [12] From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. [13] On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.

Get Started Now Look for the results of Paul’s open air ministry [14] One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. [15] When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.

Discussion Questions Where and to whom did Paul Speak? Why might Paul have sought a “place of prayer” rather than a synagogue What reasons might people today gather in places other than a church to connect with God?

Discussion Questions What response did Paul have from his speaking What might have prepared Lydia’s heart to receive Paul’s message What proof do we have that she was genuinely converted In what ways is Lydia’s example one we should follow?

Partner with Other Believers Look for words, phrases that describe Paul’s memories of this church Acts 16:40 (NIV) After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and encouraged them. Then they left. Philip. 1:3-8 (NIV) I thank my God every time I remember you. [4] In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy [5] because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

Partner with Other Believers Look for words, phrases that describe Paul’s memories of this church [6] being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. [7] It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. [8] God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

Discussion Questions What was there about the church at Philippi that gave Paul the “warm fuzzies?” What might have been the atmospheres in Lydia’s home when Paul and Silas arrived? What kinds of descriptive words might fit this church?

Discussion Questions What evidences do you see about how Paul saw the future of this church? If you were writing a letter to your church, what kinds of things could you be thanking God for, how might you similarly encourage the church God calls all believers to be partners in the gospel  we get to share the joy but …  partners must also share the load God calls all believers to be partners in the gospel  we get to share the joy but …  partners must also share the load

Do What Really Matters Look for the elements of Paul’s prayer list. Philip. 1:9-11 (NIV) And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, [10] so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, [11] filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.

Discussion Questions What were the specific things for which Paul was praying? What do you think is the relationship between knowledge and discernment?  Note that the scriptures say The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. Psalm 111:10 (NIV)

Discussion Questions Why is it important for a church to “discern what is best” or “determine what really matters?” Consider the medical practice of triage in a large scale emergency. It is possible for an individual or even a church to become quite stressed in our daily spiritual ministries if we cannot do a similar triage with needs around us We need God’s wisdom to make the decisions of how to spend our time and energies on these.

Application Following Lydia’s example, how can you take the initiative in helping someone else today? What might we need to do in our church, our Sunday School class so that if Paul (or some modern missionary) were to write to us he would see us as “partners” ? Allow your comfort zone to be invaded so you can share your faith “on demand”
