2.18 Analyzing Burton’s Style: Supporting with Textual Evidence Create a second chart with 4 columns titled: character, setting, plot, and cinematic techniques. As you watch scenes 3-8, I want you to continue with your observation notes, adding detail to each column.

2.18 Analyzing Burton’s Style: Supporting with Textual Evidence Answer and Discuss How does Burton use color and costuming to create character? What do you know about Peg from this segment? How is Edward developed as a character? What conflict is being set up? How has the director established a connection between Edward and Kim? How is the neighborhood portrayed?

2.18 Analyzing Burton’s Style: Supporting with Textual Evidence Think, Write, Discuss Look over your observation notes and choose the most significant example of a primary cinematic technique and write an analytical statement about it. See page 152. In Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses __[technique]_____ to ___[effect/achieve what purpose]___. An example of this is when ____[specific example and explanation of effect from film]___. Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, uses a long shot (cinematic technique) to show the vulnerability of characters (effect/achieve what purpose). For example, when Peg is upstairs in the castle, the long shot makes her look small so that the viewer worries about her safety (film evidence). Share statements in your group.

2.18 Analyzing Burton’s Style: Supporting with Textual Evidence CYU Individually Think about your discussion, what your peers said, and what you observed from the film, and then answer the following questions in your spiral: 1.What three cinematic techniques are most apparent in the film? Justify your answer. 2.What effect do these techniques have on the overall mood or tone? Explain with specifics from the film.
