Running Start

Ideal Running Start Student  Highly motivated  Good time management  Good study skills  Ready for challenge

 Work independently  Self-disciplined  Fast-paced classes  Ready to be done with high school

Eligibility Requirements  Under 21 at the beginning of the school year  Be a junior or senior in high school  GPA of at least 2.5  Qualify for college level English

What is ACCUPLACER?  English placement  Math placement  Untimed, taken on a computer  May take twice in a calendar year  $20 fee

Benefits of Running Start  Tuition is free  Wide choice of college classes  Earn both college and high school credit  Can earn a two-year degree

Limitations  Demands may be overwhelming  Loss of social connection to peers  Transportation, books and fees  May be adult material in college classes

 Coordinating classes on two campuses  Conflict with extracurricular high school activities  Getting classes

 Grades on permanent record of both high school and college  Calendars do NOT match  Parental access very limited  Running Start vs. AP classes

Steps to Apply  Apply online to Olympic College  Take the ACCUPLACER At OC Bremerton or OC Poulsbo

 Submit application, high school transcript, Parent/Student Agreement and ACCUPLACER scores  Complete Running Start Orientation  Meet with your high school counselor

Tips from Running Start Students  Study daily  Budget your time  Ask questions  Attend class!  Very different from high school – more freedom and a lot more dedication to work.
