Take-Home Folder Your child will come home with their homework folder each day. It is their responsibility to share it with you and return it to school the next day. This folder contains: –Daily Behavior Chart Sign daily –Homework Reading Fluency Practice Mandarin Math homework sheet

Behavior Chart Sent home every month. Students should share their daily behavior log with parents. Parents, please review this each night.

Challenge Team Students will change classrooms based on their reading level. They will work on the five main components of reading based on their needs –Fluency –Comprehension –Sight Words –Phonics –Phonemic Awareness

Reading Fluency- 110wpm Comprehension-90% Individual goals Reading groups based on reading level Site Words- 350 Phonic skills- within words vowel pairs

Grading Please check Powerschools to monitor your child’s progress. User ID available in front office. This is in lieu of progress reports.

Homework The homework sheet/newsletter will come home in the homework folder on Monday. They are due on Friday. Please review your child’s homework before it is returned on Friday and make corrections with them if necessary. Students will have 20 minutes of reading, and a word sort to do each night. One writing assignment will also be on the back of the homework. This is enrichment and optional until January. Math homework goes home after each lesson (approximately 3x per week) Mandarin homework is listed on the weekly newletter.

Curriculum Arizona Career and Readiness Standards (see website for a detailed look at all the standards) Reading: Reading Street Weekly Story, Daily 5 Friday assessment on comprehension and vocabulary Phonics: Based on Words Their Way – no Friday spelling test – students assessed in small group based on individualized word list. Grade is reported as a standard on the report card. Writing: Write from the Beginning Social Studies: Harcourt Second Grade History Strands introduce how the United States became a nation. The impact of exploration is revisited through the introduction of western expansion of the New Nation. The development of cultures and civilizations and their contributions are expanded into the continent of Asia.

Reading Reading Street Oral Reading Fluency December Benchmark – 100 wpm May Benchmark – 111 wpm DIBELS benchmark scores are kept in your child’s Data Binders. Literary Elements (plot, characters, setting, theme, problem, solution) Social Studies and Science share a cross-curricular relationship with Reading Street.

Writing Write From the Beginning & Beyond Includes Thinking Maps and Mini- lessons to produce quality pieces of writing. Thinking Journals and Non-fiction Journals are utilized by each student.

Phonics Words Their Way Moving away from “Friday Spellers”. Students are actively constructing their own knowledge of spelling patterns. Students sort and create tree maps with word cards in class.

PDSA Goal setting system for our class. Our class focus is READING FLUENCY or COMPREHENSION (based on benchmark scores.) Plan –What are we working on? Do –What will we do to learn it? Study –What were the results of our efforts? Act –What’s our next plan of action?

Conferences Conferences will be held the week of September 24 th and March 3rd. A sign-up preference form will be sent home the week before. Conferences are 15 minutes. If you feel more time will be needed we will need to set a day convenient for both of us.

Birthdays You may send in a birthday treat for their special day. Please send in the treat in the morning. Currently, we have 26 students in our class. All treats need to be store bought items and peanut free.
