Biodiversity Integration at USAID OLAF ZERBOCK HADAS KUSHNIR DIANE RUSSELL

Biodiversity is not a separate issue from development; it contributes to society’s concerns: Tackling poverty Increasing food security Improving health Managing climate change impact Building resilience in crises

Integration in the Biodiversity Policy Vision: To conserve biodiversity for sustainable, resilient development. Goals: 1) conserve biodiversity in priority places, and 2) integrate biodiversity as an essential component of human development.

Links between Biodiversity & Development Provides goods & services critical to human well-being Approach yields benefits in other development sectors Tradeoffs exist but can be minimized Improve conservation through new approaches

Ecosystem Services CRITICAL TO HUMAN WELL-BEING

CO-BENEFITS IN OTHER SECTORS Conservation can bring BENEFITS to other sectors

TRADEOFFS between Conservation and Development

Integration Characteristics Greater Development Results Collaborating across two or more sectors Associated stakeholders Understanding sectoral motivation, identifying synergies & minimizing tradeoffs Achieve multiple goals

What do we mean by integration? Integration is about… Identifying synergies and minimizing tradeoffs Being strategic Identifying systems connections Integration is not… Doing everything Mainstreaming Always linked to funding Environmental compliance or 118/119 Integration with biodiversity funds vs Integrating biodiversity considerations

Integration Approaches Use and contribute to the evidence base Build constituencies Leverage key USAID processes Use systems concepts

Leadership Group Climate Change Trade Food Security HealthDRG Economic Growth Operationalizing Integration through Integration Working Groups Focus on AD & SL Case studies Joint TDYs Joint Training Countering Wildlife Trafficking Biodiversity in trade agreements Fisheries & forests Building evidence Emerging Pandemic Threats Population, Health Environment Malaria Political Economy analysis Countering human trafficking Marine Tenure Cost benefit analysis Growth diagnostic

Questions?

Discussion Where do you see the greatest opportunities for integration between biodiversity and other development sectors? What’s worked best from your experiences and how can we build on that? What do mission staff need to better operationalize biodiversity integration?

Reminders Join us for lunch on Thursday - come with specific ideas for how you may want to engage with us further - if you can’t make lunch, us Write recommendations for biodiversity integration on post it notes and add to the wall. We’ll be delving into this more in the afternoon plenary.

Thank You! Olaf Zerbock Hadas Kushnir Diane Russell
