Introduction Fishes are one of the most important resource in our society especially when we are talking about our daily needs such as food. Some of them are also kept as pets. Specifically, as we see nowadays many fishes are dying cause of water pollution such as dynamite fishing, throwing our garbage's in water areas and etc. Toxic chemicals is one of the main cause of fish killing, for example, detergent powder which are used in the home environment contains chemicals which can cause disease and death in fish.

Objective/Problem This study aims to determine the effects of detergent powder on the operculum movement of a fish by testing and observing the behavior of it’s operculum placed on a different containers.

Hypothesis H o : There is no significant difference of the operculum movement when it is in the clean water and water with detergent powder. H a : There is a significant difference of the operculum movement when it is in the clean water and water with detergent powder.

Materials  2 500mL of water  20 g of Detergent powder  2 Containers  3 Fishes

1. 2 containers were labeled as container A and container B. 2. Both container A and B contains 500ml of water, 1 fish in each container 3. A 20g of detergent powder was added on container B while container A remains clean. 4. The operculum movement of the fish were compared and observe.

Results The fish that was placed in a water containing detergent, it’s operculum moves irregular and fast compared to the fish placed in a clean water. After 10 minutes of observation, we transferred the fish from the container with detergent powder and placed it in a safe clean water. And then, less than 3 minutes, the movement of the operculum of the fish has stopped.

Discussion When the fish was submerged in a water with detergent, the movement of it’s operculum is fast and the fish seemed to be uncomfortable with the water which contains a detergent powder compared to the other fish placed on a normal water, it’s movement is smooth and the regular operculum can be observed.

Conclusion Therefore we conclude that there is a significant difference of the operculum movement when it is in a clean water and a water with detergent.
