Welcome back!
Primary Use Colors Secondary Use Colors Welcome back 2.Review Session 2 Goals and Objectives 3.Discuss final project 4.PLN 34 Scenario Discussion 5.Review readings from Next Steps 6.Developing a Data-Based Hypothesis 7.Root Cause Analysis 8.Data Conversations 9.Evaluate learning & discuss HW Agenda
Primary Use Colors Secondary Use Colors Articulate the purpose and value of developing hypotheses. Articulate the connection with the Cycle of Inquiry. Create hypotheses based on data. Decide when to apply validation techniques, including Triangulation; to validate a higher stakes Pattern in Data. Distinguish between symptoms and Root Causes in areas of instructional need. Hypothesize the Root Cause(s) of a Pattern in Data before strategizing a solution. Articulate the purpose and value of exploring Root Causes. Refine Hypothesis following Root Cause Analysis. Extend thinking on Correlation and Causation. Use paraphrasing in Data Conversations. Objectives By the end of the session participants will be able to:

Primary Use Colors Secondary Use Colors Other cycles of inquiry deal with decisions that have long-term effects on planning for student learning. These actions are often complicated to implement and are thus more difficult to change. Examples: Student placement in special programs Assigning students to elementary teachers for the school year Some cycles of inquiry lead to decisions that have short-term effects on planning for student learning. These actions are often easily implemented, and if it becomes clear that a change is needed, these actions are easily changed. Examples: Adjusting tomorrow’s lesson Temporarily grouping students in a classroom Validating or Contesting a Hypothesis Short-Term Effects Long-Term Effects
Primary Use Colors Secondary Use Colors Triangulation Validation Using Multiple Data Sources “Triangulation” is the process of using multiple data sources to address a particular question or problem and using evidence from each source to illuminate or temper evidence from the other sources. It also can be thought of as using each data source to test and confirm evidence from the other sources in order to arrive at well-justified conclusions about students’ learning needs. - IES Practice Guide: Using Student Achievement Data to Support Instructional Decision Making Data Source 1 Observations/Ref ined Hypothesis Data Source 2

Primary Use Colors Secondary Use Colors Root Cause The cause of an event that, if eliminated, would substantially reduce or prevent the event. For decisions that will have a long-term impact, the amount of risk associated with a decision can be diminished if the Root Cause is established. 13
