THE “OTHER “ TOASTMASTERS MANUAL: Competent Leadership You came to Toastmasters to improve your speaking skills, but we have more than that to offer. Don’t neglect the opportunity to improve your leadership skills by completing your Competent Leadership manual.

THE TOASTMASTERS CAREER PATH Communication Track CCAC-BAC-SAC-G New MemberDTM Leadership Track CL AL-B AL-S

COMPETENT LEADER AWARD (CL) What’s in it for me? SET YOURSELF UP TO MEET FUTURE GOALS – Keep your options open. You might not plan to stay in Toastmasters long enough to achieve your Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award, but you never know where life will lead you. GRATIFICATION – The CL program asks you to give your club a little more than your presence and a periodic speech. Active participation in your club can lead to greater satisfaction in your overall Toastmasters experience. CREDIBILITY – The extra initials after your name speak volumes to your fellow Toastmasters. Make sure they tell the best possible story about you. ADVANCEMENT – Advancement in Toastmasters could mean advancement at work. Document your achievement on your resume and let your boss know what you’ve done.

Complete the Competent Leadership Manual Complete 10 projects aimed at developing the following skills: Listening & Leadership, Critical Thinking, Giving Feedback, Time Management, Planning and Implementation, Organizing and Delegating, Developing Your Facilitation Skills, Motivating People, Mentoring and Team Building SURPRISE! Most of these projects can be completed by doing what we do every week in our Toastmasters meetings. Most of the roles we play apply to one or more projects. Every speech you complete can also be applied to the CL manual. Three projects require extra effort. You might choose to mentor a new member, organize or chair a club contest or event, or assist the club webmaster or newsletter editor. Completion of the Competent Leader manual prepares you to begin work on the Advanced Leader Bronze award.

Why A Separate Leadership Program? Recognizes the importance of all meeting roles. Encourages participation. At meetings As a mentor Organizing/Assisting at special events Provides a way to track progress. Fosters a sense of accomplishment. HELPS MEET DISTINGUISHED CLUB PROGRAM (DCP) GOALS!

GET STARTED Review the manual to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the projects. Get a CL Matrix and check off roles as you complete them. Each project requires 1 to 3 roles. Always have your CL manual with you at meetings. If you are assigned a role that will fulfill a requirement, ask another Toastmaster to complete the appropriate evaluation at the end of the project. Highlight completed projects. To speed your progress, watch for opportunities to step in when someone else can’t be at a meeting.
