Health Education and Promotion Terminology Objectives: –Define health, health education and health promotion –Differentiate between the professional activities that these terms support –Differentiate between signs and symptoms –Replicate the health continuum

Health How could you tell if someone was healthy? How could you tell if someone was ill? Can someone have a disease and not be ill? What are the indicators of health? What are the indicators of illness? Are these two states mutually exclusive? Is health the opposite of disease?

Health A state of complete physical, social and mental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (WHO Constitution of 1948) A functional state which makes possible the achievement of other goals and activities of living. (Hanlon, J. (1974) Public Health. Mosby, St. Louis. p. 73)

Disease A condition where a body part or organ system is functioning abnormally; characteristic signs and symptoms; etiology (cause) and progress may be known or not known Sickness or Illness is characterized by typical patient problems (symptoms) and physical findings (signs). Syndrome: collection of signs and symptoms (is not a disease)

Wellness "a method of functioning which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable. …” Don Ardell (1977) High level wellness: An alternative to doctors, drugs, and disease.

Health Education Any combination of planned learning experiences based on sound theories that provide individuals, groups, and communities the opportunity to acquire information and the skills needed to make quality health decisions. (American Journal of Health Education, March/April, 2012, Vol. 43, No. 2.)

Health Promotion Any planned combination of educational, political, environmental, regulatory, or organizational mechanisms that support actions and conditions of living conducive to the health of individuals, groups, and communities.
