Unit 1 Tourism & Travel: Globetrotters!

What is a ‘ globetrotter ’? It is a person who travels regularly or frequently to countries all over the world.

The Harlem Globetrotters

Topics Different Kinds of Tourism. Tourist versus traveler. Globalization and development. Use of language to advocate a cause. Backpacking and trekking. Tourist advertisement.

TOK! What is meant by ‘development’? How does language affect tourism? Globalization! Sounds nice, right? Economy or environment? Do they always work against each other, or can they be mutually beneficial?

TOK continued… How do you know if you’re being a sustainable tourist? Are there any universal ethics for tourism? Or are there different ethics for different places? What is a government’s role in tourism?

WFLMS Globetrotters 4 Types of Tourism: Responsible Tourism Eco-Tourism Ethical Tourism Sustainable Tourism

What’s the difference between these types of tourism? Each student receives and reads the definition of one type of tourism. Students placed into groups of 4, with one rep. for each definition Each student explains to the group his/her def, and then writes key words, concepts, or main ideas on the group’s “Place Mat” (not in the circle) After each student has written and spoken, any similarities should be written inside of the circle (what do you have in common?) Share with the class

Global Code of Ethics for Tourism “the Code includes nine articles outlining the ‘rules of the game’ for destinations, governments, tour operators, developers, travel agents, workers and travelers themselves. The tenth article involves the redress of grievances and marks the first time that a code of this type will have a mechanism for enforcement.” A United Nations Agency (UNWTO)

Become the Teacher Your task is simple: – Each pair/group will receive one of the 10 UNWTO articles. – Discuss the article as a group/pair – As a group, you must explain and teach this article to the rest of the class. – More Detail: You must create a lesson for the class about your UNWTO article – Lesson length: 3-5 minutes To find out more, go to
