Evaluation Question 2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Your Film and Trailer What is your Unique Selling Point for your film? The unique selling point for our film is our female protagonist. This is unconventional of our genre crime/thriller and from the usual role of a main female character which tends to be the ‘damsel in distress’ which the male hero needs to save against the villain. We really liked how Uma Thurmin plays ‘Beatrice’ in the film Kill Bill and wanted to emulate this strong kick ass female character in our film ‘The Hunter’. So we believe this is our USP. The use of time remapping is a postmodern twist on the genre and also our female representation also is postmodern. These are both USP’s of our film also. How does your slogan/tagline create audience expectations within your film? Our Tagline is ‘The Prey Becomes The Predator’ This creates audience expectation for our film because the fans are assuming they will see a transformation in our main character. This means we have to make sure we deliver on the narrative so the audience aren’t left disappointed.
To show how effective your film trailer is in promoting your film: Give some examples of the key ingredients (main conventions) from your film that will appeal to your Target Audience. Give examples of the conventions used in your trailer that appeal to your Target Audience. We broke many conventions for our trailer and used postmodern elements. This will appeal to our target audience. Although saying this, we didn’t always break conventions because we thought it wasn’t the best thing to do at times. We kept to Todorov’s theory of narrative structure because we didn’t want to go against the narrative conventions as we wanted to keep some conventions of the genre, crime/thriller. Our audience will appeal to our unconventional style because our target audience like other similar films such as Kill Bill because of their unconventional conventions such as the cartoon element and the female protagonist. This is why I believe our target audience will appeal to our unconventional style also.
We are giving our film ‘The Hunter’ a 15 rating. Our target audience ranges from We were torn between giving it an 18 rating (similarly to Kill Bill) however the feedback we received from our focus group said that a 15 rating is the most suitable as the content is violent but not enough to warrant an 18 certificate. We were happy with this because it means more people are eligible to watch the film in cinemas which means our profit will hopefully improve and more people will enjoy our film. We believe that men will appeal to our film more than women, although as our main character is a female protagonist we are hoping that more women will be more inclined to see our film. Even though we have done as much as we can to appeal to our main target audience, we are also concerned in captivating a wider audience and niche audiences. We believe this is possible and because our film is fairly unique and postmodern we like to think other people outside of our target audience will take interest and will see the film. It is highly important that we do this, it will improve our profit.
Film poster ▫ Our film poster helps to promote our film in many ways. This is because the more posters and forms of advertisement you do in order to promote your film, the more people will see it resulting in a wider audience. Plus word of mouth about your film will help advertise your film further. ▫ Our main image helps attract the audience because it is eerie, interesting and this helps build up the tension for our film. The image also stands out which is important because the more it stands out and is obvious to the eye the more people will stop and look at it, taking in all the details and may be attracted to come and see the film. ▫ Our main image and poster as a whole clearly establishes the genre of crime/drama easily it has many common conventions which relate to the genre such as low key lighting, dark image and a mystical main character. It was important to stick to some conventions (whilst using postmodern aspects) so the audience can quickly identify the genre of the film. I also believe it helps sell the film through the slogan/tagline because it hints at the narrative well and leaves the audience intrigued and leaves them thinking about the film and making them want to go and see the film. The design of the poster helps attract the audience because it has endearing colours, and the main picture is of our main female protagonist, and she looks very mystical and interesting to the audience. By looking like this she is selling the film to the audience because they will be interested and will want to see the film and narrative. Resulting in a wider audience. We will put our poster on both the streets and web 2.0 (websites and forums etc). we will do this because we are aware many people will see the posters online and this will make our audience wider as more people use the internet each day and will come across our poster. We will also put the poster in the local papers, magazines and on bus shelters. This is a form of push advertisement which the audience will see wherever they go. Meaning they are thinking about our film a lot. This is done by all the big blockbuster films and is very effective which is why we intend to do it this way.
Film Magazine The reason we made a film magazine is so we can advertise and promote our film ‘The Hunter’ further by giving further information to the audience. The magazine helps build up the hype for our film and gives the audience anticipation and leaves the reader looking forward to watching our film. The front cover of our magazine helps promote our film because it hints at both the genre and the narrative the perfect amount, and builds the suspense of our film. The front cover of our magazine shows our main female protagonist but the image is interesting and vague which will leave the reader feeling intrigued and giving them a feeling of excitement which we hopes leaves them wanting to watch the film. It clearly identifies the genre of crime/thriller easily as we have kept to the conventions enough in order to make this obvious for the reader. The conventions include; low key lighting, blood and dark colours. It also helps sell our USP because the main image is our female protagonist so the audience will identify this straight away before anything else. The front cover clearly shows a strong minded, edgy female character which straight away grabs the reader attention! This is highly important because if we fail in attracting the reader then they will never want to come and see the film. The colours and image help do this almost immediately as so does the text. For example in bold capital letter on the front ‘IT’S A MUST SEE MOVIE’ this stands out the reader and almost tells them that they have to go and watch the film or they are missing out. We will try and reach a wider audience by having an online version of our magazine so more readers will have a chance to this exclusive copy resulting in them becoming potential fans. The word of mouth will also be effective in widening our audience.
