Mr Dave

 Find out how to help your child with Maths calculations  Understand how children use and apply their knowledge in Maths  New assessment procedures in Maths  What we are doing about Maths homework.

 Addition – objectives for the year  Given a number, identify one more. 

 Addition  Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+)  Add one- digit and two-digit numbers within 20, including zero

 Addition  Solve missing number problems eg 10 + __ = 16

 Subtraction – objectives for the year  Given a number, identify one less  Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving subtraction (-) and the equals (=) sign

 Subtraction  Solve missing number problems eg 20 - = 15

 Multiplication – objectives for the year  Count in multiples twos, fives and tens (to the tenth multiple)  Solve one-step problems involving multiplication by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher

 Multiplication  Solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher

 Division – objectives for the year  Solve one-step problems involving multiplication and division, by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher

 This is the children putting their Maths knowledge into action  Using and applying involves pupils in solving problems, explaining their methods and results, and using their Mathematics, particularly to reason (mainly through questions)  Using and applying is used in all aspects of the Maths curriculum  It is where pupils use their knowledge and understanding of mathematics to solve problems.

 Let’s have a go at some Using and Applying so you can put into practice what you have learnt here  Puzzles and Problems – Bean Bag Buckets, Pick a Pair  Recipe  Questioning by the teacher

 Reasons behind the removal of levels: ◦ Level driven curriculum ◦ Used to much ◦ Negative impact on teaching  Problems with levels ◦ Are they fair? ◦ Impact on teaching and learning ◦ Not regular enough  Benefits of assessment without levels ◦ Clarity for pupil and parents ◦ Support for pupils

 Purpose of day to day assessment for parents: ◦ Broad picture of where their child’s strengths and weaknesses lie and what they need to improve ◦ Collins objectives ◦ Teachers will assess every objective ◦ Informs about the achievement, progress and wider outcomes of their child across a period of time, not just a one day SNAPSHOT!  You will now ONLY receive narrative comments and an effort grade in the report

 We have recognised at times Sumdog can be quite difficult for KS1 pupils  Feedback from parents and teachers  Homework will start from next week  Excellent Maths websites to help your children at home: years/counting Multiplication video
