Shuffle Pass

This play is a combination of lead/screen with pass blocking by most of the line. It is very deceptive and hard to pick up by the Defense. It is a hard play to master, and a period must be devoted to this one play every day. It can be taught in individual time with just the QBs, RBs, and 3 or 4 big stand up dummies. Great compliment to passing game and outside screen game. 3 step drop by the QB is a must. Backs must show hands and simulate pass pro as they read the defensive rush. They cannot turn their back to the line. They must wait, find the hole and burst to it as they raise their front hand for the ball.

Shuffle Pass Backs must be patient and not get in a hurry to react. This play should take about 2-3 seconds to develop. Most people who run this play unsuccessfully do so because their RBs are not patient in reading the Defense. The QB must take a good drop and also be patient in looking for the front hand of the RB. That is his trigger. If he gets pressure before the RB is ready for the ball he must retreat and keep his eyes on the RB. If no hole opens up after 3 seconds or so the RB must burst out to the side of the shuffle and turn the play into a running screen. This option must be practiced in your individual and group time.
