Time

Today we will be learning: how to read and use words about time about the relationship between units of time.

Mental Activity We are going to learn a rhyme. It will help us to remember how many days there are in each month.

Let’s say the rhyme together. Thirty days hath September, April, June and November All the rest have thirty-one Except February alone Which has twenty-eight days ’tis clear But twenty-nine in each leap year. Let’s say the rhyme together.

How could we use the rhyme to help us check? Thirty days hath September, April, June and November All the rest have thirty-one Except February alone Which has twenty-eight days ’tis clear But twenty-nine in each leap year. We could add the days in each month.

Main Activity Today we are going to learn to measure time. How do you think people measured time before clocks were invented? Who can tell us a fact about time that they already know?

How many minutes are there in one hour? How long is a minute? 60 seconds How many minutes are there in one hour? 60 How can we measure time?

What activities do you think you could complete in less than a minute? You are going to try to estimate a minute: when you hear “Go!” close your eyes and sit quietly when you think one minute has passed, put up your hand.

Group Work Time yourselves completing a variety of activities and record the results. Find out time facts: how many days are there in a week, seconds in a minute, years in a century, days in a leap year, years in a decade, etc? Find out how old you are in years, then in months, then in weeks. Can you work out how old you are in hours?
